How do you spell pumpkin.

There is something off about my music collection. When I scroll through it I have an obvious bias towards men. I don't try to discriminate, but I definitely more often chose male artists over females. So to mix the testosterone up a bit I thought I should make this a female artist post. Especially since I have a feeling the next few ones will be boys again.

Kate Nash just released a new album. I heard a few songs and liked it so far. However, generally when I am searching for new music I am also searching for music to go on the ipod at work. Since her new album has the explicit stamp I have yet to delve into it. Apparently people don't like to hear curse words and sexual innuendos when they shop. Lame.

Vacation remix.

My friend Alex asked me to make her a vacation mix since we will be headed to FL in just over a week. I may or may not make Alex a new mix, but most certainly will be making myself one. She will be able to appreciate my choice of music because while I'm listening to my ipod I will be singing her sweet lullabies.

I think she will be pleased.

Water get over my head.

Sometimes when I have trouble falling asleep I listening to music. There is a fine line between what puts me to sleep and what keeps me awake. It doesn't necessarily have to be soothing music to take me away to dream land. I just need something that my mind gets lost in listening to.

We're young enough to say, this is a good life.

Welp solid work this weekend. This song has been stuck in my head all day. I need to put it on my shuffle so that I can run to it when I detox tomorrow. DETOXXXXXXX! I think the first verse is reminiscent of my weekend besides the fact that I didn't wake up in London. I actually woke up in my bed with only 4hours of sleep and remembered I had to go to work today. Like I said, solid work this weekend.

"Woke up in London yesterday
Found myself in the city near Piccadilly
Don't really know how I got here
I got some pictures on my phone
New names and numbers that I don't know
Address to places like Abbey Road
Day turns to night, night turns to whatever we want
We're young enough to say" -onerepublic

If you don't know... now you know.

I'm not one of those people that likes a band that no one has ever heard only to ditch them when everyone has. In fact those people really bother me. However every now and then I do feel a little proud when I have been listening to something long before I hear it everywhere. I only wish I had my blog sooner to prove it.

Forest Family Records

Two of my favorite music blogs "Gorilla v. Bear" along with "Weekly Tape Deck" have created Forest Family Records. Between the two of these blogs I always a new selection of independent artists to browse. The goal of the record label is to provide limited releases of analog versions of new artist's music.

Forest Family Records newest release is from the band Gauntlet Hair. The song below reminds me of Animal Collective with its drowning muted lyrics and upbeat catchy background percussion.

Artist: Gauntlet Hair
Song: I Was Thinking

I also find it is curious how the list of oddly named bands is infinite.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME

This is Alf. Who I incorrectly referred to as Al because that song always gets stuck in my head when I think about this TV show...the mind works in mysterious ways. Thankfully Stephanie is just as random as I am and knew what I was talking about.

ALF ALF ALF! I also really love theme songs. Unfortunately Alf's is really lame, but this is the intro to the show. I thought it would spark some memories.

I can call you Betty, and Betty when you call me you can call me Al.

So we are headed to the weekend, and a great weekend it will be. I'm in good spirits and whenever that is the case I find myself listening to Paul Simon. Nothing old school about this one because I think every person my age should have some of their greatest hits.

My personal favorites are "50 ways to leave your lover". Not that I have a lover to escape from but the chorus and beat line are very catchy.

Also "Me and Julio Down by the School Yard". Funny thing about creating a blog was coming up with a title I could live with. I wanted the address and the title to match so that was a challenge in itself. Every time I thought of a lyric from a favorite song there was already a blog that either had that title or web address. I mean someone seriously had meandjuliodownbytheschoolyard.blogspot.com, and on top of that they had picked it because it was so obscure that they could use the blog as their personal diary. What a waste of a good lyric.
How I settled on Sussudio was sadly a two hour event of trial and error, but I'm happy with it.

"You Can Call Me Al" Does anyone remember that TV show with a weird animal like creature named Al. I'm struggling here and pretty sure no one knows what I'm talking about.

"Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"
"Slip Sliding Away"
"Still Crazy After All These Years"
"Late In The Evening"
"Graceland"

If you want me to keep going I can.

We are so smooth now.

I have a thing for pure and simple lyrics. Of course a good beat is helpful, but the tone of an artists voice can be addicting. The Morning Benders released their new album last month and ever since then I have been hearing about them everywhere. Its no wonder though because every song on the album presents a relaxing mood with a climatic chorus. They will open for the Black Keys when they venture to Louisville in August. So yet another one to add to the library, and you should too.

Artist: The Morning Benders
Song: Excuses

I like this version of the video for the song Excuses because it explains the sound of the song...cool idea. He obviously has some pretty talented friends. I guess I'm going to have to force my friends to pick up some additional hobbies so that we can pretend to be cool and talented. Don't think they would be surprised by my ridiculous demands, but I doubt they will oblige.

Must be nice to be so perfect.

I first discovered Andrea Davidson a couple years ago at a random bar. My sister had heard her perform and invited me to go watch her one Friday night. She is a Louisville native who plays the guitar, sings, and writes her own music. She just released a cd this past February and I was able to make it to the release party.

I am seriously in awe of the fact that people this talented exist in the world. I mean I have difficulty clapping to the beat of a song and this girl is playing the guitar while performing her own music. That sure makes me feel like I was jipped in the gene pool.
